Here's Sen. John McCain "strongly rebuking" (the Wall Street Journal's interpretation) Donald Trump over his attacks on the parents of Army Capt. Humayun Khan, who was killed in Iraq in 2004 protecting his unit: "It is time for Donald Trump to set the example for our country and the future of the Republican Party. While our Party has bestowed upon him the nomination, it is not accompanied by unfettered license to defame those who are the best among us."
But here's the real John McCain on Trump:
I [unintelligible] support the nominee of the party, and I'll tell you what, when any time from now on when that question is asked, if I change my mind, I'll let you know. I'm not apologizing at all. I am not apologizing in the slightest.
Gee, how very mavericky and principled of him. In the intervening year since Trump attacked McCain himself, ("He's not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.") McCain has steadfastly refused to do what any principled politician would do—reject Trump.
So much for principle.
