This is a serious question on my part. And I’m uncertain what the legal and political ramifications would be.
I see four possible ways, or turn of events, that would result in Trump’s exit. Let's review:
1.) Someone could take his life. It could be an ISIL inspired terrorist. A Gold Star parent. An undocumented Mexican immigrant. This man is inspiring fear and hatred that is almost unprecedented. You can’t rule this out.
2.) Trump may have a mental illness that is getting worse. He is not a young man. Brain tumor, dementia, Alzheimer. All possibilities. Or something more prosaic. And there's already serious talk in psychological circles that is now bleeding over into the media.
3.) Trump would rather drop out than lose. A loss would be catastrophic to his ego. His recent talk about the debates and even the whole election being “rigged” might give him an "out” if his poll numbers begin to look hopeless. He has given very little thought to actually serving as President. The lure for him seems to be “winning” rather than actually holding the office. (Remember the rumor that Trump offered Kasich “unprecedented power” if he would serve as VP?) I can see him handing the keys to Pence and walking away.
4.) Once the Republican incumbents survive their primaries, there could be a mass rebellion led by people like Ryan, McCain and other moderates who see the handwriting on the wall. Cruz and Kasich have already bailed. Rubio and even Christie might have to. No politician who is concerned about his future wants to go down with the ship. If they banded together and threatedned Trump with public humiliation they might force him to withdraw.
So what would happen?
Can a dead man be elected President?
Can a man who publicly quit?
Does Pence become the candidate and name another VP?
Does the RNC reconvene a Convention?
Are there any precedents?
Would various state election laws require 50 different solutions?
I bet there are experts out there who know the answers to these legal questions.
Then there’s the political side...
Would the Dems be better off if Trump staggers to the finish? Would the country?
Who would the Republicans go to? Could they unite around a candidate in time?
What would the die-hard Trump supporters do?
I think a lot of people would breathe a sigh of relief if Trump exited the playing field. (I know my wife would…. I have to assure her everyday that he can’t win!) But wouldn’t it be better for progressive causes if Trump goes down — WAY DOWN — fighting and takes the Senate with him? That’s my take. But that may be out of our control, just like Donald Trump himself.
