• Ginny Thrasher, Katie Ledecky and Michael Phelps win the first U.S. gold in Rio.
• Rhode Island installs the nation’s first offshore wind turbines: Currently, there are about 75 gigawatts of installed wind power in the United States, but until now it’s all been done on land. But the Deepwater Wind has just installed the first turbines atop the five towers of the 30-megawatt Block Island Wind Farm. Construction is expected to be completed in early September. It will be the first U.S. offshore wind farm. Offshore installations are more expensive and difficult to install, but they have the advantage of steadier winds. By 2020, the U.S. Department of Energy forecasts that about 10 percent of U.S. electricity demand will be met by wind.
• It’s Day 177 of the GOP’s refusal to hold a hearing on Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland: It’s Monday, August 8, and Day 177 since Justice Antonin Scalia died and Mitch McConnell decided no nominee would get any Senate attention: No meetings, no hearings, no votes. It's also Day 140 since President Obama named Merrick Garland as Scalia's replacement. Help turn the Senate blue with your donation and get all branches of government working again.
• That scary statue of Lucille Ball has been replaced:
The terrifying sculpture of Lucille Ball (on the left), known as "Scary Lucy" will no longer haunt children's nightmares. It has been replaced with a much friendlier-looking version of the beloved comedy star.
The original, nightmare-inducing sculpture that looked literally nothing like Lucy was installed [Saturday] in Lucille Ball Memorial Park in Ball's hometown of Celoron, NY. Its unveiling inspired such outrage, a Facebook page was dedicated to the cause of replacing the monstrosity and garnered more than 11,000 likes. An SNL skit also lambasted the piece.
• Whistleblower retaliation alive and well at Hanford:
"[It's] as serious as it gets," [Washington state Attorney General Bob] Ferguson told King 5 News. "At Hanford there's a culture of indifference by the federal government and their contractors. Frankly, we're not going to put up with it anymore.... So right now we're trying to get before the judge immediately asking for immediate steps required from the federal government to protect workers. That's the bottom line."
Allegedly, that "culture of indifference" is what got Sandra Black, an employee concerns program manager (ECP), fired in January 2015. Black, who worked for DOE contractor Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS), was in charge of hearing out grievances raised by workers who have safety concerns, such as those working at Hanford. Black claims that she was terminated after speaking to investigators from the Government Accountability Office (GAO).
• Chicago Tribune headline—“Wife of a Bears' lineman wins a bronze medal today in Rio Olympics.” Wait until November when when they’ll be telling us “Wife of president wins presidency.”
•
• Pooties definitely rule.
• On today’s Kagro in the Morning show, Greg Dworkin says polls still look good, even where they normally don’t. #NeverTrump floats a new name. Olympic #GunFAIL. Plain old FAIL at the IOC. Gingrich gets the money out of politics. Ailes’ runs secret black ops at Fox, because Fair & Balanced.
