A handful of decades ago, Democrats held the majority of Kentucky federal offices. This changed in the early 1980s with the election of Mitch McConnell, who has become a GOP senate majority leader. Another GOP Senator, Rand Paul, joined the Republican leadership, which includes all but one U.S. Representative from Kentucky.
Now Kentucky Democrats have a chance to flip Paul’s red seat to blue—Lexington Mayor Jim Gray, who is running a spirited race for U.S. Senate. Gray, now in his second term as mayor of the state’s second largest city, cites two polls showing him tied with Senator Paul.
Gray writes: “Sen. Paul skirted the law so he wouldn’t have to give up his Senate seat to run for president. It’s the kind of deal only a Washington politician would make.”
Gray touts his small-town roots from Glasgow, Ky., his experience growing a small family construction firm into one of that industries largest businesses, and his hands-on problem-solving years as mayor of a major city as qualities that will serve him well in the Senate.

This is the only important Kentucky Democratic race to be decided this November 8.
