according to the Bangor Daily News, Roxanne Quimby, who has tried to create a national park in the North Woods of Maine since the 1980s, has donated over 87000 acres of land to the federal government for the creation of a national monument. The monument, which will be Maine’s second after Sieur De Mons, and the first in 100 years, will protect slightly less than 1% of the North Woods, which covers 10.5 million acres. Obama will likely declare the area a monument as part of accepting the donation, and the monument is likely to expand, as there are other landowners in the area such as the Nature Conservancy, who are likely to donate their holdings to the monument as well. This will be the 23rd new monument Obama has created, the sixth hes created this year, and his 25th use of the Antiquities Act overall. I strongly applaud Mrs Quimby’s generosity , which includes 40 million dollars for maintenance and upkeep, and strongly support protecting as much of the North Woods in perpetuity as possible. Ideally, that would be all 10.5 million acres, but that will take a Maine governor that isn’t Paul LePage. Obama isnt done either. Grand Canyon Heritage, Castner Ranger and Gold Butte are other monuments that have been pitched to him.

President Obama created the monument this morning. Important takeaways from reading the proclamation_
1. It will be run by the Park Service
2 Snowmobiling and Hunting will be permitted, in areas that Quimby had allowed it, and the state will have authority to permit snowmobiles and hunting to pass through other areas
3 Proclamation allows for further expansion of the monument.
