Donald Trump really kicked off the African American voter outreach over the weekend with a tweet revealing his compassion, concern, and selflessness—and he’s still at it. To recap, Trump’s immediate response to the shooting death of NBA star Dwyane Wade’s cousin was to suggest (while misspelling Wade’s name) that it was a reason “African-Americans will VOTE TRUMP.” A second tweet corrected the spelling of Wade’s name, and only hours later did Trump (or whoever had wrested control of his Twitter account) tweet condolences. Early Monday, he showed which of those tweets was closer to his heart:
His creepy excitement over violence aside, Trump appears to have settled on his argument to non-white voters: you are living in fear, and I will make you safe. It doesn’t seem to have occurred to him that the fact that most of his campaign is based on the idea of arming racially resentful white people, with the occasional foray into fantasies of increased police brutality, might just make African Americans and Latinos suspicious of just how much safer they’d be in a Trump presidency. Then again, this is someone whose first response to the shooting of a woman pushing a baby stroller was to think—and say in front of an audience of millions—that it might benefit him electorally. Decency and tact are not high on his list of attributes.
