Arizona: Just to recap, the biggest (if least surprising) story from Arizona is that John McCain defeated his GOP primary opponent, ex-state Sen. Kelli Ward, by a convincing 54-37 margin. GOP Rep. Paul Gosar won his primary (from the left, or at least from big agriculture) 70-30. We’re still waiting on:
AZ-02 (D): Ex-state Rep. Matt Heinz is leading ex-state Rep. Victoria Steele 53-47 with early votes only, to see who’ll take on freshman GOP Rep. Martha McSally.
AZ-01 (R): Pinal Co. Sheriff Paul Babeu is leading the GOP primary for this open seat being vacated by Dem Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, who’s running against McCain. He’s at 34, to 23 for 2014 AZ-09 nominee Wendy Rogers, 22 for wealthy rancher Gary Kiehne, and 15 for ex-Sec. of State Ken Bennett. The winner faces Dem ex-state Sen. Tom O’Halleran.
AZ-05 (R): Former GoDaddy general counsel Christine Jones (who finished third in the Arizona gubernatorial primary in 2014) is leading here at 30, followed narrowly by the Club for Growth’s fave, state Senate president Andy Biggs at 28. Ex-Maricopa Co. Commissioner Dan Stapley and state Rep. Justin Olson trail at 22 and 20. The winner has an easy Nov. race in this dark-red open seat, being vacated by Rep. Matt Salmon’s retirement.
