Donald Trump claims to have awarded nearly one-tenth of 1 percent of his wealth to charities over his lifetime. But before you’re blown away by that level of generosity, the Clinton campaign has a few tidbits to share with you.
Donald Trump fashions himself an “ardent philanthropist” who “gives to hundreds of charities and people in need of help.” But you don’t have to dig too far into his giving history to realize that claim is just smoke and mirrors: Trump is a man with a long history of lying about his charitable giving.
And while Clinton notes, as many others have, that the Donald J. Trump Foundation is rarely graced by any funds coming from Donald J. Trump, the foundation’s namesake does decide where the money goes.
According to the Washington Post, Trump isn’t using his foundation to solve tough global or domestic problems. Instead, he largely uses his foundation to make gifts to his personal friends’ charities and to groups that do business at his properties—and to further his own political ambitions:
