Boy, it must be sweet to be Corey Lewandowski. Lewandowski parlayed his firing as Donald Trump’s campaign manager into a paying gig at CNN, talking about the guy who just fired him. But, months later, he was still being paid by Trump.
The campaign insists the $20,000 payment in August was just part of a severance agreement that will include payments through 2016, but its FEC filing described the payment to Lewandowski as being for “strategy consulting.” A consulting role for Lewandowski is in line with earlier reports that he talks to Trump nearly every day. And you have to figure that if Trump is honoring a promise to pay someone—rather than just stiffing them like he does most people—he must really value something that person is providing.
All of this has left CNN on the defensive, again, about paying for commentary from someone who not only used to work for but is still taking money from the candidate he’s commentating on. Wednesday, the network denied reports that it had suspended Lewandowski over the ongoing Trump payments … reminding everyone that the blatant conflict of interest is intentional.
