In this story posted at The New York Times, we learn
Donald J. Trump’s hotel chain agreed to pay a $50,000 penalty and revamp its data security policies after a couple of breaches exposed 70,000 credit card numbers and other personal information of its customers.
Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman of New York, who announced the settlement on Friday, said in a news release that banks tracing fraudulent card use last year determined that the cards had last been legally used at Trump hotels, indicating the security breach had happened there. Further investigation found malware at several Trump hotels and that an attacker in 2014 had gained unauthorized access to steal sensitive information.
Apparently the chain knew about the breaches in June 2015 but did not notify customers in a timely fashion, but in fact not for 4 months.
AG Schneiderman said this violated state law.
Mr. Schneiderman said that delays in implementing security measures may have contributed to additional exposure of personal data in November 2015, a breach that was discovered in March.
I suppose it is possibly this COULD come up in the contexts of the debate, precisely because one main rationale for Trump’s candidacy is his performance as a businessman. As head of the organization, he is as responsible for its conduct as is the Captain of a Naval vessel.
If nothing else, this is one more piece of information that helps paint a more complete picture of Donald J. Trump.
