In this case, the San Diego Union-Tribune. The editorial is titled Endorsement Why Hillary Clinton is the safe choice for president.
Let me begin by quoting the closing paragraph:
This paper has not endorsed a Democrat for president in its 148-year history. But we endorse Clinton. She’s the safe choice for the U.S. and for the world, for Democrats and Republicans alike.
Now of course this will make no impact in the electoral college, given how solidly Blue California is. But this is a very conservative paper, in a conservative part of the state. Remember that former Governor Pete Wilson had been Mayor of San Diego. It was edited by Herb Klein, who before and after doing that served as Communications Director for Richard Nixon. It joins an increasing number of Republican papers either endorsing Clinton, or refusing to endorse Trump (perhaps endorsing Johnson, who has more endorsements than does Trump).
While they consider the Trump campaign an entertaining show, they express concern what it could mean were he to be elected.
They could see his administration as friendlier to “ruthless Russia” that to traditional allies, that reneges on treaty commitments thereby removing the US as a stabilizing influence around the world, that ruins the US financial trustworthiness (and offers a parallel with Greece), and with an enemies list (and the list offers is bracing).
By comparison, it is complimentary of Clinton. It offers the to be expected criticisms on things like emails, Clinton Foundation, Wall Street speeches, and even some aspects of her stewardship of the Department of State, then follows that immediately with
But despite Trump’s insistence otherwise, she has the better temperament to be president — and the experience, background and relationships with world leaders that we need in a president.
It reviews positively aspects of her service in multiple roles, going in reverse order, as Secretary of State, Senator, and First Lady.
Then we encounter these paragraphs:
Diplomacy. Collaboration. Patience. Mitt Romney, whom we endorsed for president in 2012, exhibited those same traits as the moderate governor of Massachusetts and the business-savvy savior of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
Vengeful, dishonest and impulsive, Trump is no Romney. This is why Hillary Clinton is the safest candidate for voters to choose in a complex world.
The editorial goes on to point out
Terrible leaders can knock nations off course.
and cites as examples Chavez of Venezuela and Kirchner of Argentina, following that with a one sentence paragraph:
Trump could be our Chávez, our Kirchner. We cannot take that risk.
All that is left is the closing paragraph with which I began.
They frame Trump as a terrible leader. They compare his possible impact to two South American leaders hated by conservatives and business types. And THEN then endorse Clinton, and it is again worth noting these words, that that endorsement is as
the safe choice for the U.S. and for the world, for Democrats and Republicans alike.
