The unbelievably positive trend in polling — both in Iowa and New Hampshire and nationally — continues for Bernie Sanders.
There is a new CBS/NY Times poll out, showing Sanders now trailing Clinton nationally by just 7 points (48-41). This is compared to the same CBS/NY Times December poll, which had Clinton up by 20 points (52-32). Bernie gained 13 points in just one month.
The crosstabs show that Sanders has gained across all Democraphics (to varying degrees). He’s gained +8 points with men, and +10 points with women. He’s gained +19 points with liberals (clearly rallying the base), while also improving +2 points with moderates. He gained +12 points with voters under age 45 (amongst whom he is now leading Clinton 2 to 1), +3 points with voters 45-64, and +4 points with voters age 65+.
There is clearly something happening out there. It makes you wonder if the NY Times Editor knew that this was coming, and that is why they had the story about Bernie’s big momentum and excitement. Without that, publishing this poll they would look flat-footed.
Anyway, this confirms the IBD/TIPP poll that showed a 4 point national race (Clinton 43, Sanders 39), which by itself seemed like an outlier too close to be true. This new poll adds to the evidence — Bernie is clearly surging. And it is looking increasingly like a single point race nationally.
Nationally, the polling trend has taken a sudden turn since the beginning of January, when polling resumed after the holidays:
This sucker is wide open for the taking, folks.
