There have been a few articles written this month in Daily Kos about mass die-offs of birds in Alaska that seem unexplainable. Can we ponder that this could be a result of the Fukushima radiation runoff into the Pacific Ocean that has been occurring unabated since March 2011 after the earthquake, tsunami and triple nuclear reactor meltdowns in Northeast Japan? We know that 400 tons of radioactive water have been ‘leaking’ into the Pacific daily and TEPCO the Japanese power / utility has no idea what to do about it. The fish offshore of Fukushima have steadily been measured to be too radioactive to eat at or above 1000 becquerels of cesium per kilogram since the accident occurred. Daily leakage of the hundreds of DNA mutating radionuclides into the Pacific surely will affect the Pacific basin environment of our largest ocean and its shores/animals/plants.
Whales, fish, birdlife, seals, eels all are being toxified by these radionuclides, and that is not just for a day. Radionuclides like cesium, plutonium, strontium have long half-lives and ‘hazardous lives.’ The latter equals 10-20 half-lives. So cesium-137 has a half life of 30 years. That means after 30 years HALF of any cesium-137 present today, in the Pacific Ocean, will still be radioactive. And its hazardous life, during which we have to worry about it mutating our DNA or any lifeform’s in the Pacific basin, is 300-600 years. The human body recognizes cesium as if it is potassium, which is the most plentiful electrolyte in each cell of our body. Strontium-90 gets into our bones and bone marrow, and can produce cancer and leukemia. Its half life is similar to cesium-137. Cesium and strontium are but two of hundreds of radionuclides resulting from the fissioning of uranium, which is the basis for nuclear power and the toxins produced by this ultimately polluting form of energy production. All nuclear power basically does is produce heat from fissioning uranium, which boils water, which becomes steam, which turns a turbine, which can produce electricity. As has been said,
the electricity it produces is fleeting, but the waste nuclear power produces lasts essentially forever.
The gyres of current that cover the Pacific, north and south, run in circles. The northern gyre spins counterclockwise, so the radioactivity that runs out of Fukushima every day cycles from the shores of northern Japan round to Alaska, along the Canadian west coat, USA west coast south from Vancouver Island to Washington State, Oregon, California, etc. The radioactivity gets into the food chain, of course, and can poison any life form along that precious chain. Warmer water may be a cause of these recent bird deaths, but we have to realize that the Fukushima plant could also be responsible, and the radioactivity continually running into the Pacific Ocean from the decimated leaking nuclear reactors MUST be stopped ASAP. Mankind actually has managed to ruin half our planet via Fukushima and nuclear power’s failings. All nuclear power plants should be shut down. Remember, 25 of the USA’s 104 nuclear reactors are the same General Electric model as
the Fukushima nuclear reactors that melted down disastrously. If you live close to them, you and your family are subject to a possible disaster just like Fukushima’s. See my video on the gyres and Fukushima on my youtube channel: conradmillermd
