After Donald Trump's 3 AM instruction to all of America to "check out" a detractor's "sex tape," Trump surrogate Newt Gingrich is in the throes of despair. And when you've lost Newt Gingrich:
"What Trump has got to understand, he's got to sing either, 'I got to be me' or he's got to order a new song, 'I've got to be President.' They're not the same song. He's got to become much more disciplined," Gingrich said in an interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity.
"For a while there, I thought he had really turned a corner. This last week, I think has been, frankly, a lost week. A week which has hurt him. Which has shaken his own supporters."
"You can't tweet at 3 o'clock in the morning. Period. There's no excuse. Ever. Not if you're going to be president of the United States," he added.
None of this is to say that Gentleman Newt has stopped supporting the man who has clearly chosen the "me" demeanor over turning that corner. Nor is it meant to imply that Newt Gingrich is feeling uncomfortable with his own previous efforts this week to prop up the new Trump surrogate line: Trump's debate loss to Clinton now justifies a Trump campaign attack on Bill Clinton, because reasons.
But he is getting a wee bit alarmed that the man he's attempting to send to the Oval Office is clearly, one month before the election, not presidential material. Now we all sit back and see whether Newt connects those final dots.
