California GOP Rep. Darrell Issa is facing his toughest re-election challenge in eight terms, with a new poll for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee by Tulchin Research showing Democrat Doug Applegate up 46-42, with 12 percent undecided. That's encouraging news since no challenger in CA-49 has gotten within 16 points of Issa. Recent internal DCCC polls have shown a tighter race, either tied or giving Issa a small two-point edge. So this new poll could either be an outlier or sign that things are breaking in the right direction for Democrats.
Certainly the DCCC sees an opening and continues to invest in ads against Issa, a candidate with the deepest pockets in Congress. Some prognosticators have also moved the race out of their "Safe Republican" categories.
Even better—Issa himself seems rattled too, threatening to sue over a pretty standard-issue attack ad run by the Applegate campaign.
