Rep. Joe Heck, currently running for Senate to replace Harry Reid in Nevada, is one of the latest Republicans to suddenly discover that he can’t support Donald Trump.
I believe that any candidate for president should follow and campaign an ethical, moral and decent campaign as they go about the trail. I accept that none of us are perfect. Certainly I am not infallible. However, I can no longer look past the pattern of behavior and comments that have been made by Donald Trump. Therefore, I cannot in good conscience continue to support Donald Trump nor can I vote for Hillary Clinton. My wife, my daughters, my mom, my sister and all women deserve better. All Americans deserve better.
As you can see in the video of Heck’s remarks below, many in his audience were vocally unhappy with him, booing and yelling about being disappointed in him. That’s one reason many Republican lawmakers have stuck by Trump—their base demanded it of them. But the fact that they’re abandoning him now doesn’t show that they’ve suddenly gotten the courage of their convictions. It shows that the electoral calculus has changed, just a month from the general election. Heck’s opponent, Catherine Cortez Masto, nails it:
“For nine months, Joe Heck has been Donald Trump’s strongest supporter in Nevada as Trump has demeaned and disrespected women, made racists comments towards Latinos and showed himself completely unfit to be President. Heck said he had ‘high hopes’ about Trump becoming President, that he completely supported him and that he had no doubts about Trump having his finger on the nuclear button. What you’re seeing now is not leadership, it’s Joe Heck trying to save his career, but Joe Heck’s made clear that he’s with Donald Trump.”
