Throughout the campaign, I thought (hoped) this election would deliver a death blow to the Republican Party of rich, old, white men, so out of touch with reality. Lo and behold, post-election, the truth might actually be the other way around.
If I am upset with anyone about the outcome of this election and its far-reaching consequences, it is the Democratic Party. They DESERVED to lose, just as they have deserved every other election loss we have endured . The reason they lose is always the same—they have no strategic plan for beating the Republicans, which should be their main focus. They pick a candidate opportunistically, based on the current pool, rather than grooming someone and planning a campaign to elect that person based on current politics and sentiment. If they wish to survive this, they should begin thinking about the next election right now and come up with an intelligent strategy, and a clear vision for the future.
In this case, they should be utterly ashamed as they completely IGNORED the momentum of the Sanders campaign and the very apparent (and deep) desire for fundamental governmental CHANGE that it represented—that it begged for! This desire for change was the over-arching public sentiment of this election on both sides. Instead, they undermined his campaign and chose the WRONG candidate!!
They were so concerned with sending the message that a woman could become POTUS, they failed to see that the public was not on board with their message, or their candidate, at any time during the campaign. Ultimately, people did not so much vote for Trump, as they voted against Hillary Clinton.
I hope our country, the Earth, and the Democratic Party survive this catastrophe, and that there is hope for a kinder, gentler, more intelligent nation somewhere in our future.
