When I host again on December 29, I’ll be asking you to tell us your goal for DaKoWriMo (Daily Kos Writing Month), January, 2017. Your goal can be a wordcount (50k words, or fewer, or more), or a revising goal, or a research goal, or a finally-sort-through-my-drawer-full-of-unfinished novels goal— whatever you want. Maybe pick something you’ve been wanting to motivate yourself to do for a while now.
I’m trying to decide between 1. drafting a novel that’s got about 12k written so far and 2. revising (based on an edit letter) a novel I’ve been revising since the George W. Bush administration and 3. outlining and researching a new novel. Any of those should take up a month at the least.
I’m really looking forward to being Internetless for the winter. The internet is my biggest obstacle to writing. You sit down at the computer and you have a choice of opening a vein or clicking around on the news… well, what would anybody do in those circumstances?
What’s your biggest obstacle to writing? Wait, don’t tell me. Instead—
Tonight’s challenge:
A callow youth and his or her stout companion have left the Startled Duck, in a rainstorm, no less, with a map in their hands that will tell them how to find the hut of the Oracle of Smudge, a grebe of surpassing wisdom who can tell them where to find the longlost Jewel of Togwogmagog.
The first stage of their journey leads them to a long, rickety bridge, where they find their way blocked by…
...Your biggest obstacle to writing. Write the scene.
Try to limit yourself to 150 words.
Write On! will be a regular Thursday night feature until it isn’t. Before signing a contract with any agent or publisher, please be sure to check them out on Preditors and Editors, Absolute Write and/or Writer Beware.
