The morning after he said that “all options” were on the table to punish Democrats for sitting in to push for a gun vote, House Speaker Paul Ryan wants unity in the wake of the Dallas shootings and wants us to avoid the “temptation to let our anger harden our divisions.” Oh, and he wants something else that might surprise you if you were judging what he wanted by his actual behavior as a lawmaker:
Ryan reiterated that "every Republican and every Democrat wants to see less gun violence," a statement that comes after a decision was made to indefinitely postpone a vote on gun legislation seeking to keep guns out of the hands of suspected terrorists.
"Sometimes we disagree on how to get there. Sometimes we disagree passionately in how to get there. But in having this debate let's not lose sight on the values that unite us," Ryan said.
Yes, some of us who want to see less gun violence think the government should attempt to do something about it, and some of us who claim to want to see less gun violence don’t have answers beyond moments of silence when appropriate, and in fact are actively standing in the way of other people’s solutions.
