How much support would you lend to someone who demeaned your service to your country? How about someone who accused you of mistreating veterans? How many times would you let someone attack the very core of who you are, and still pop up to ask for ‘please, sir, more?’
If you’re John McCain, the answer is plain: an infinite amount.
McCain continued to support Donald Trump even after Trump pointedly refused to support him. McCain supported Trump event after Trump called for McCain to be defeated. McCain still kept his allegiance to Trump after Trump called him a “dummy” and falsely stated that McCain was last in his class at the naval academy.
And McCain’s self-diminishment goes beyond just accepting personal abuse. Someone who is supposedly a defense expert might be expected to shy away from supporting a man who is being shunned by 50 Republican experts on national security. But not John McCain. He’s willing to put Trump’s finger right on the button.
Finally, someone who is supposedly a patriot might be repelled by a candidate who calls for political assassination.
But McCain is with Trump—all the way to the bottom.
Ann Kirkpatrick’s new ad drives home just how willing John McCain is to accept Trump’s constant stream of abuse, and how willing McCain is to accept anything that Trump might do or say.
Paul Ryan has stated that there is some line that Trump can’t cross before he will withdraw his support for Trump—though as long as Ryan can insist that he has his fingers in his ears and can't hear what Trump is saying, that line may never be reached.
John McCain doesn’t even have that excuse. He’s simply allowed Trump to kick him in the teeth over and over, and surrendered his last shreds of dignity to the goal of hanging onto his Senate seat … no matter what.
With the polls showing this race very close even before Trump began his post-convention plummet, now would be a great time to support Ann Kirkpatrick in her effort to send John McCain back to one of his eight homes. He can pick one to sit in while he regrets signing on as Donald Trump’s suck-up champion.
