Are Democrats the low life leakers? Republican Peter King thinks it could be so. Don't you think so, Mr. Comey? Don't you? Won't you list for us the names of everyone who was appointed by Barack Obama who knew anything about anything that showed up in a newspaper account?
The level of leading questions and pointless fishing from Republicans in the hearing has reached absolutely fantastic proportions. The current peak level of ludicrous was Devin Nunes begging Comey to say that Russians like Democrats best, invoking the ghost of Ronald Reagan to protest that no one could think Russians would prefer Republicans.
Because sure, going back 35 years to the Soviet Union doesn't make the Republican case seem completely pointless and off topic. Carry on, Dev.
No, wait. The most ridiculous thing is that, in a hearing about Trump's connections to Russia, President Obama’s name has been raised by Republicans more than Donald Trump, since every Republican is engaged in a double-backflip with a twist in an effort to find some damn way to make this about President Obama.
Through most of this, Comey got to try out every variant on “no comment” ever created. He's also been forced to point out to Republicans —repeatedly—that complaining about leaks then trying to get the FBI Director to publicly give a list of everyone in the government who might possibly have have known classified information is … not smart.
But talking to Democrats, Comey was happy to confirm two things—Putin preferred Trump, and the Russian leader liked businessmen more than politicians, because they're easier to bribe.
