Today’s comic by Ruben Bolling is Inspector Trump investigates whether dictators are Fantastic:
• Obama endorses Emmanuel Macron for president of France.
• Tribes vow to fight Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke over Bears Ears National Monument: Zinke is headed to Utah next week, and tribal leaders in the area are ready to do battle with him if he proposes shrinking the monument. Zinke has ignored the tribes’ repeated calls for a meeting with them. “It’s not like he can’t find us, said Ute Tribal Chairman Shaun Chapoose at a press conference in Washington, D.C., Wednesday, noting that dozens of tribal leaders are in the nation’s capital this week for the National Tribal Energy Summit. Ryan gave the keynote address to the summit on Tuesday, but has been silent about Bears Ears. Chapoose later tweeted, ”I don't think @Secretary Zinke’s done me any good ... I'm willing to forgive if he talks to me now."Although President Obama did not set aside as much land for Bears Ears as the five tribes in the area had wanted, his including Indians as part of the long-term governance of the monument is a first.
• Meanwhile, Alaska Natives are joining the fight against Pr*sident Trump’s call to drill offshore in the Arctic:
Last Friday, the president signed an executive order to open up territory in the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans to offshore oil and gas exploration. On Wednesday, the group Resisting Environmental Destruction on Indigenous Lands joined other environmental groups — including the League of Conservation Voters, Sierra Club, and the Natural Resources Defense Council — in filing a lawsuit in federal court to stop that order.
• Well, now, isn’ this exciting!! Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski are engaged:
According to the report, Scarborough popped the question over the weekend during a trip to the south of France and Monaco, where the couple was celebrating Brzezinski’s 50th birthday.
“Scarborough, 54, got down on one knee and proposed at the scenic Bar Bellini at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, which has a breathtaking moonlit outdoor terrace overlooking the Mediterranean Sea,” the paper said. Wedding plans have not been set.
• One murdered by a mob, three tortured to falsely confess (one refused), two sentenced to death by all-white jury, one killed by sheriff while in custody for allegedly trying to escape:
• New Deal era electricity cooperatives building rural smart grid:
Rural electric cooperatives spread across the U.S. in the 1930s to electrify parts of the country where as many as nine out of ten rural homes lacked electricity. Today, many of those co-ops are building on that legacy by deploying an advanced, 21st-century version of the electricity distribution systems they brought to farms decades ago.
In some cases, rural America is seeing the smart grid arrive at their doorstep well before their urban and suburban counterparts.
On today’s Kagro in the Morning show, Greg Dworkin & Armando (sort of, mostly) kept the focus where it belonged as House Republicans passed Trumpcare 3.1. What’s next? How will the Senate handle it? Will they even want to? Also: the Comey effect; George Will discovers Trump is demented.
