There are mornings you wander through your social media feeds and it’s all politics, or fake news, or an update on which celebrity is leaving which other celebrity. And then there was this morning, where I once again was reminded of the old adage “Practice reading out loud before trying to read to your partner, or you will spew coffee all over the table and laugh so hard you cry.” What, that’s not an old saying at your house? Grab a beverage of your choice and meet me below the story break and message from our sponsor, but do NOT be drinking said beverage when you watch the video…
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
The setting: Pokemon World Festival 2017 in Seoul, South Korea
The event: Music montage featuring fifteen dancing Pikachu
Our intrepid Pikachu team shakes their little tushes to Uptown Funk, but as the music shifts to a song from the musical “Hairspray” Lead Pikachu Dancer begins a slow, ominous deflate. Apparently this is a criminal act a Pokemon World Festival Dance Montage because the poor creature is grabbed by several men and dragged offstage while his (hers? its? Do Pikachu HAVE a gender?!) fellow Pokemon bravely continue dancing as if nothing has happened.
Several minutes later our Hero Pikachu attempts to return, but is not permitted to rejoin and is, barely in camera range, led off to an unknown fate. The best writeup of this IMHO was by NPR, which had a series of questions:
- Who are these men hustling Deflating Pikachu offstage? A popular tweet called them "government security agents."
- Who's inside those costumes? Is it kids?
- Is the Pikachu punished for its deflation, or sweetly patched and refilled?
- And finally: Why Hairspray?
I had other questions:
- Do the other Dancing Pikachu realize that this was #NotNormal and that #Resistance is important?
- Why does Deflating Pikachu have their triumphant return stymied?
- Will there be a Deflating Pikachu in the next Pokemon Go update?
- Why did the person videoing this not consider the return attempt camera worthy? If it were me, my video is trained on ANYone being man... erm, pikahandled by Dudes In Suits.
- Is Deflating Pikachu ok?!!!
While we ponder these and other questions, please peruse what you really come here for each evening- the Trio of Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures that form the backbone of this community diary series.

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments? From John M Webb:
There's nothing I love more than comment as essay. Don't even bother reading my diary until you have read this comment from Yeller Dog.
Also from my same diary, RevDay adds some much needed context in another comment as essay. I am a firm believer in deferring to those who have studied something more than I have.
From Mike The Liberal:
There are probably many great comments in Crashing Vor's diary, but the one I read first and really liked after I posted was this one by maskling. He's correct that we need to worry less about understanding conservatives, and more on bringing our message to the people.
