Hidden Figures, the biographical film following Black female mathematicians who were instrumental in the infamous NASA Apollo missions, has quickly won over American’s hearts in its two-week-old run.
During its first weekend, the film beat out the latest Star Wars movie to rake in $22.8 million — approximately $1 million more than Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Fusion reports. This number is even more impressive considering that Hidden Figures was playing on almost 2,000 fewer screens. Cool, right?
The box office numbers from last weekend show that the film still reigns supreme in American theatres with a projected $25.3 million earned over the long weekend, according to the Huffington Post.
With a man endorsed by the KKK slated to be President in a few days, the film’s popularity reminds us that there is still a large part of America that is willing to see and honor Black women for their contributions to our country’s history.
