I’ll cut to the chase. Karrie Delaney is a great candidate. She is another non politician who is stepping onto the battlefield this year to make a difference. And VA HD 67 is an attractive place to consider, I’ll explain below.
Karrie has an impressive personal history. She knows the importance of veterans, and their reintegration when they get back from war zones. Her father came back from Korea in the late 50’s, got his GED, and was fortunate to land a good job at a VA hospital.
After college, she went to work for a group home for foster kids, helping to give them the skills and confidence to make it in the world. She volunteered as a sexual assault counselor, and ended up as the board President of the county’s crisis counseling organization. Later she became the Communications Director to a not for profit devoted to ending sex trafficking. An ability to deal with stress and crisis is not a problem for Karrie, and neither is the size of her heart.
This should be a winnable district. It is in northern Virginia, and lately it looks like it’s been trending blue. In 2014, (D) Senator Mark Warner won the district 51-46%. But it gets better. In 2013, McAuliffe beat Cuccinelli 51-43%. Democrats swept the district for Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General by similar margins.
Here’s the advantage. There are more Blue precincts than Red precincts in this district, and they are stronger. For instance, the strongest recent GOP precinct is the Stonecroft precinct (904) which went for Gillespie 56-41% in 2014. But there were only 686 total votes cast. Dulles South (114) looks like the largest precinct in the district, and Gillespie only won 49-47%, but there were only 662 votes cast. The GOP swaths look huge, but appear to be sparsely populated. Contrast that with Warner’s strongest districts, Brookfield (902) which went for Warner 57-39%, but where 1355 votes were cast, and Navy (911) where Warner won 56-40% and 1514 votes were cast. We don’t so much need to flip votes in GOP precincts, although places like Dulles South look possible, what we need to do is to activate and motivate the Democratic strongholds for just a hundred or two more votes each to overcome the narrow GOP margins in their precincts.
This district should by no means be out of reach to flip in 2017. The GOP incumbent Jim LeMunyon sailed back into the legislature simply because he was unopposed! But not anymore. Not with Karrie Delaney in the picture. But she needs our help, and right now! I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. We have a golden opportunity to kick start these candidates right now, incumbents are forbidden by law to solicit or even accept donations while the legislature is in session, but it’s only a 45 day window, and I believe we’re now a full week in. LeMunion is entrenched, he already has a campaign war chest of $63,951 to Karrie’s $17,281. This is the ideal time for her to play catch up, and level the playing field. It’s also the time for her to be out there, framing the issues and her positions while LeMunyon is occupied.
Let’s get Karrie off to a flying start, make it easier for us to help her ride the wave the rest of the way. If you’d like to learn more about Karrie, you can click HERE. The website is under construction, but should be updated soon. If you’d like to contribute to give her an early boost, wander over HERE. If we can flip Virginia in 2017, or even make deep inroads, it could be an early indication that good things may be on the way in 2018. Let’s “Git ‘er done”!
