Received this e-mail today from former Iowa Democratic party Chairwoman and Howard Dean (D. VT) endorsed candidate, Mr. Andy McGuire’s (D. IA) gubernatorial campaign:
Friend,
I’ve been deeply moved by the recent outpouring of stories from sexual assault and harassment survivors through the #MeToo social media phenomenon. It takes an incredible amount of bravery to share personal stories like the ones I’ve read over the past 48 hours.
Survivors shouldn’t be the ones bearing the burden for society to change. Our state leaders have the responsibility to act and be vocal about sexual assault and harassment prevention.
I’m calling on Gov. Kim Reynolds and our state legislators to act and speak out against sexual assault and harassment, will you join me?
We have much work left to do but with the recent harassment scandal involving Iowa Republicans in the state legislature, highlighting Gov. Reynolds' failure to lead. Instead of taking action, Gov. Reynolds simply claimed to have “no control” over them. It’s clear our state leaders don’t take this matter seriously.
Join me in demanding Gov. Reynolds protect survivors and hold everyone accountable for their actions, even if they’re elected officials.
I thank everyone who has opened up about their experience and support those who haven’t participated because the experience is too painful to recount.
As governor, you can count on me to be a vocal advocate for survivors of sexual assault and harassment, and I will support legislation that will make Iowa a safer community for everyone. We must ask the same of our state leadership, sign on if you agree.
In solidarity,
Andy
