In this time of fundamentalist Christian Roy Moore flaming out of public life, it’s interesting to watch what his brethren are doing. Convicted felon and televangelist Jim Bakker is back on the scene again and even though he was incarcerated for fraud, he’s still at it with yet another scam. Bakker emotionally invokes not only the bye-bill but complains about how his hero, Donald Trump, is besieged by Evil Democrats plotting against him. But Bakker has a solution. He’s giving you people one last chance to dial his 888 number and spend $1,500.00 for buckets of his food (yes, buckets) because you will need them. The earth is headed right now for 42 months of tribulation, according to the bye-bill, and Donald Trump is not the anti-Christ, Bakker tells us. Patheos:
Hard sell: Weeping televangelist Jim Bakker warns viewers that if they don’t buy his pancake mix their grandchildren will go to Hell.
An emotional Bakker went on a tear-filled rant begging his audience to buy buckets of his End Times survival food, warning that the grandchildren of his audience members would face eternal damnation unless they called a 1-888 phone number so they could send him $60 (plus shipping) for a bucket of pancake mix. [$1,500 for the entire Survival Grocery Store]
Bakker, deeply concerned that President Trump would be killed by Democrats, declared:
“If they kill our president or they destroy him or whatever, if we elect the other side. This is it. I think maybe Trump is here to give us time to get ready because all hell is going to break loose.”
“We’re not going to have the Antichrist show up to get the sign of the Mark of the Beast on our forehead or hand, it won’t happen without hunger. Hunger is going to be the main thing. Most people don’t get it, they don’t want to get it, but that is why I am so obsessed with you all being prepared.”
Now if you’re doubting Jim Bakker’s veracity or sagacity at this point, maybe you need a little stroll down memory lane. The New York Times:
The Bakker business suffered a crippling blow in 1987, when it was revealed that Mr. Bakker had in 1980 had a sexual encounter with Jessica Hahn, a young church secretary from Massapequa, N.Y., and had paid her $265,000 to keep quiet. He was stripped of his ministry.
In 1989, Mr. Bakker was convicted of federal charges that he had bilked followers out of $158 million by offering lifetime vacations at Heritage USA while knowing he could not provide them and that he had diverted about $3.7 million to support an opulent lifestyle.
Long story short, Bakker and his then-wife, Tammy Faye, whose bizarrely overdone false eyelashes were famously compared to two tarantulas fornicating, (on each eye) had to shut down their Praise The Lord television show and declare bankruptcy. Bakker was sentenced to 45 years in prison and Tammy Faye divorced him while he was in the slammer. Bakker’s sentence was commuted after only four years, a fact which Bakker was later to characterize as “a miracle” and we tend to agree with him on that. Bakker’s twisting of scripture, invocation of Trumpism, and his spin on the grandkids going to hell is an interesting journey, if you care to take a listen.
The second video is Bakker tearing up while holding his grandchild. It’s an Oscar worthy performance.
