With Thanksgiving looming as a major holiday in the United States, it’s almost a requirement that I cover that topic. But allow me to shake things up just a little. Instead of saying what you are thankful for in general terms, let’s narrow the window. What are you grateful for today, this month, this year?
The state of our politics is likely to shorten our lists. It certainly has reduced my choices...but here goes.
In light of what happened to Noble Fur late last month, I’m thankful that she is still alive, healthy, and happy. (If you didn’t see the diary, and are willing to read the unpleasant details, the link is here.) Two years ago, I was certain that I would be catless until I stopped traveling. Then a little gray kitty showed up in my yard, wanting a home. Not only is she gorgeous and sweet, she is also very willing to travel, meet new people, and explore new surroundings. For a cat that randomly showed up in my life, she quickly showed herself to be an ideal companion.
I’m thankful that I (along with a few million other people) was able to witness a total solar eclipse. Such a rare event, and it came to us instead of appearing somewhere in the Pacific Ocean.
I had the good fortune of spending four months in Oregon, experiencing the wonders of nature whilst getting paid to be there. When I realize how few people my age are capable of working long days alone in the middle of nowhere, I find it hard to complain even on the bad days.
My trustworthy Toyota truck reached the amazing milestone of 400,000 miles, and is still going strong. Yes, I’ve taken care of it, but there is also a luck of the draw in there somewhere. I mean, there are mechanics who can’t make their own vehicles last that long.
I’m grateful to have siblings and in-laws who share my political leanings in these troubling times. When this diary posts, I might still be on the way to my brother’s house. Oh, and I’m grateful that the made-from-scratch black bottom pie that I promised to bring along turned out right. A master chef I am not, but I do like to make a good dessert.
What’s on your list? When you reflect on the things that are going well for you, what stands out as the most important?
