A favorite right-wing tactic, when confronted by any allegation, is the "what about" defense. For example: Trump colluded with Russia; "Oh yeah? Well what about Hillary Clinton and Uranium One? That's the real scandal!" Et cetera, ad nauseum.
We've been hearing the "what about" defense regarding the sexual allegations against Trump. Sixteen women have come forward accusing Trump with sexual misconduct; "Oh yeah? Well what about Bill Clinton?" Trump has done this himself, bringing Clinton accusers to one of the presidential debates. I guess somehow that's supposed to mean his own behavior is acceptable? I'm not sure what the point of the "what about" defense is; the tortured logic hurts my brain.
Well okay, you "what about" people, you win. Let's do it. What about Bill Clinton?
Bill Clinton was impeached. Bill Clinton had a special prosecutor appointed to investigate him, and then an Independent Counsel. The investigation into Bill Clinton lasted over eight years. The investigation into Bill Clinton cost over $70 million. A Grand Jury was empanelled for 30 months looking into Bill Clinton.
Yes, you read that right, he was impeached. Impeachment is done by the House of Representatives, and on December 19, 1998 they voted 228 to 206 to impeach Bill Clinton, including 5 Democrats who voted for it. After impeachment comes a trial in the Senate to remove the president from office, and on February 12, 1999 the Senate voted against removing him.
So, what about Bill Clinton? I believe the women who have made allegations against him, and I believed it back then. Yes I'm that old. I thought he should have been removed from office. And I voted for him. Twice. Yes, I'm still that old. I don't give a damn about his "legacy" or anyone else's; it would have been better for the good of our nation. The Presidency isn't some vanity job, it's there to do the people's business.
If he had been removed, we could have had 2 years of President Gore, and we could have seen how he did. Gore would have run in 2000 as an incumbent, and maybe we would have been spared George W. Bush, who I thought was the Worst President Ever. Until January 20, 2017 (Horror Day).
So yeah. What about Bill Clinton? Why aren't Trump and Clinton treated the same? I think Trump should be treated just like Bill Clinton. I think he should be impeached. There's no need to wait on the Russia investigation. The sexual misconduct is way more than enough. It should not be tolerated. Ever. By anyone.
And this time, the Senate should remove him from office.
