I just did something I would not have considered doing a few months ago - writing a local republican politician to let her know that for the first time I would *not* be able to vote for her if she were on the ballot. You see, she is the most honest politician I've ever known, from both parties. She is hard working, intelligent, and has always kept our town's best interest in mind when voting.
She and I know each other fairly well, so I wrote explaining that I did, at times, switch parties (especially at the local level) for the sake of getting competent and compassionate leadership. I explained that I was put off by how the state GOP has been destroying local control over the past few years. I let her know that the national GOP's support of Roy Moore was my last straw.
And I had to let her know that if the GOP did not turn itself around by her next election, the prospect of voting for her would be a deep moral quandary. That I was done giving even the slightest hair of a mandate to the state & national party through my occasional party-switch.
If you have the desire to do so, I am suggesting that you do the same. No doubt most of you can think of that one local counselor or state rep who actually listens - even if you disagree on the issues. Write them expressing your sadness and fear that the GOP has lost its way. Hopefully doing so can help bring this country back from the brink.
