Republican Sen. John Cornyn is apparently so desperate to back up Donald Trump that he will tweet any old thing if its headline seems to say something good about Trump. But he may be about to learn that it’s a good idea to read the entire article first. Witness:
Former George W. Bush Attorney General Michael Mukasey said that any surveillance of Trump Tower was “conducted at the behest of the attorney general — at the Justice Department,” rather than on the orders of former President Barack Obama. But it gets better:
Mukasey said if there were a wiretap on Trump Tower, it would mean that there was suspicion someone had been acting as Russian agent.
"It means there was some basis to believe that somebody in Trump Tower may have been acting as an agent of the Russians for whatever purpose,” he said. “Not necessarily the election, but for some purpose.”
So what Cornyn was really tweeting, under the “Trump likely right” headline, was “Trump likely right that Trump Tower was under surveillance, but that’s because the Justice Department probably had reason to believe there were Russian agents in Trump Tower.”
