Democrats were one vote away from a single payer, universal healthcare system in 2009 until one man came along and screwed us. Former “Democrat”, and currently independent Senator Joe Lieberman from Connecticut decided that “I can't see a way in which I could vote for cloture on any bill that contained a creation of a government-operated-run insurance company.” With Joe Lieberman about to come back and screw us again as the FBI Director, I thought now would be a good time to summarize why single payer, universal healthcare is the only answer.
- Healthcare is a human right. The Declaration of Independence states:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed
It’s not life and liberty, only if you can afford it. A majority of the population wants federally funded, universal healthcare, and the founders believed that it was the governments job to secure that right.
- Implementing a plan like Bernie Sander’s single payer system can save Americans over $6 trillion in healthcare costs over the next ten years.
- Premiums are replaced with a tax, removing the middle man and allowing cheaper, more direct access to healthcare.
- Universal coverage ensures no one is missed, and a larger pool reduces costs for everyone.
- Healthcare wouldn’t be subject to local politics, where a GOP dominated state legislature can deny expanding access to healthcare, like they did to 400,000 Virginians for partisan reasons.

And while I’ve got healthcare and preexisting conditions on my mind, a quick shout out to the doctors, nurses, corpsmen and medics who delivered my daughter Valerie on May 10. The experience was amazing and everyone there made it their point to make sure it was as pleasant an experience as possible. Government run healthcare has been great for our family so far.
