I was amazed and intrigued to hear Alan Dershowitz, a renowned lawyer and constitutional scholar and no friend of Donald Trump, state on Fox that he does not see any justification for the appointment of a special counsel to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion by the Trump team. His reasoning is that a special counsel is charged with investigating criminal activity. He says that nothing that he has heard breaks any laws. This includes helping Russia interfere with the election and Trump, the head of the executive branch, doing his best to inhibit any investigation by the Justice Department or the FBI. Also, there can be no obstruction of justice if no crime was initially committed. This as opposed to Watergate, where the burglary was clearly a criminal act. Unethical and immoral behavior is not a crime. Just look a Wall Street.
If what he says is true, and I’m not saying that it is, we clearly need some new laws. I was going to add that the CIA should be charged with undermining Putin with every resource available, but, of course, that will have to wait until Trump is gone. If this conduct it not illegal it should be. Personally, I believe that it amounts to treason, which I understand IS a crime.
