Good evening, Kibitzers! Since I sadly did not go to NN this year, I drove up to Massachusetts for the weekend, to visit for my nephew’s 16th birthday. I’ve stayed for an extra day to help my brother with something on Monday morning, so I’m writing this on Sunday night, knowing tomorrow I will get together with him early, then drive back to New Jersey, then squeeze in some work if there is anything at all left of the workday, then take care of a lot of other stuff at home, and then drive to my office in Connecticut on Tuesday.
So, it’s not impossible that I’ll think of a brilliant subject before Tuesday night and write it up, but I want to get something scheduled tonight so it’ll be in place if that doesn’t happen.
Accordingly, and especially since the weekend has been pretty upsetting for those who don’t so much approve of Nazis, I’d like to remind you that you can dance if you want to.
If you don’t remember the 80s, don’t worry — you are not doomed to repeat them. Ivan Doroschuk, lead singer of the Canadian group Men Without Hats, was pissed off because he’d been kicked out of a nightclub for “pogo-ing”, a form of new-wave dance that involves vigorously jumping up and down. Bouncers more used to disco dancing thought it was dangerous, and Mr. Doroschuk (starring in the video) wanted to let everyone know that it was safe, dammit.
The video was shot in West Kington, Wiltshire, in England. The actor of short stature is Mike Edmonds; the young woman is Louise Court, later editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan; and the Morris dancers are the Chippenham Town Morris Men, performing a dance called Monkton Park.
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well. |
