So you say you’re a Democrat? If you are, then you should be helping us fight in Virginia for these 2017 races. We are, literally, fighting for our lives over here in this Mid-Atlantic state. Our House only has 34 seats held by Democrats, with 17 districts taken by Hillary Clinton that are Republican held, and several more districts that are close enough to win IF WE HAVE HELP.
I am the founder of LWCC, Liberal Women of Chesterfield County & Beyond, and we have been working our butts off trying to make in-roads for our local Democratic Candidates. I will link at bottom of this article to their pages. Virginia needs a strong showing to not have to surrender to the horrors that have taken over this nation from the top down.
Heather Heyer was murdered in Charlottesville by a Nazi. These same groups are planning to come to Richmond and we, along with many other grassroots and progressive organizations, are hoping to have alternate events for our people to stand up to these hate groups, but far enough distance to hopefully avoid any clashes like those this past weekend.
I am not a nonfiction writer. The only reason I have been writing articles on Daily Kos is to get the word out about the HELP WE NEED IN VIRGINIA. I am a poet and fiction writer. My poem below is the first poem I’ve been able to write since the presidential election. I wrote it very quickly this morning and then felt compelled to share as Heather Heyer’s memorial is occurring as I type this article.
It Could Have Been Any of Us
-for Heather Heyer
She said they tore her apart –
brutalized her,
-- her legs anyway
then apologized for being graphic,
like that mattered anymore.
Civility in uncivilized times,
we thought we’d gotten so
far, with our car designs
and cell phone apps, but you can’t
blame folks for being angry.
Violence on many sides, many sides,
he says while Heather Heyer grows
colder. Never a day older than she was
walking across a street. Nazis in America –
2017, like a poorly written screenplay
off off Broadway. She was brutalized,
she said – they broke her. They broke
everyone that still had a heart or brain
left to break. Flowers and colored chalk on asphalt,
a makeshift memorial to the American dream –
no longer standing.
