As I write this the street is getting torn up outside my apartment building. My building shakes momentarily from time to time with the feeling of a magnitude 3.0 earthquake. Even with my windows closed I can hear the screech of metal tread vehicles, the beep-beep-beep of back-up alarms, the THUD as a large mechanical excavator breaks up the pavement. They’re replacing the main sewer line and branch lines on my street.
How often is it we give much thought to what it takes to make the whole system work when we flush our toilets? Sanitary sewer systems are a crucial part of civilized infrastructure. Fresh water is all too often taken for granted, let alone grey and black water disposal and treatment.
So the next time you flush your toilet say something to yourself and to the spirit of humanity in thanks and in thought of safety to all the very hard working and dedicated women and men who make your life easier and healthier.
