Kamp Kos Weekend Open Thread — Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018
A few years ago at Peninsula State Park in Door County, a fellow camper had brought along a 24-foot extension ladder so that he could tie a tarp high above his campsite. The tarp was massive, covering his tent, the picnic table, fire pit and good deal of the campsite beyond.
I couldn’t imagine hauling around a ladder just for that, but I was with him on the value of having a tarp. If you’re a tent camper, it’s great to have a tarp or screen/shelter along so if the deluge comes, you can keep dry and still cook, play games or even enjoy a fire in the great outdoors, and not just stay stuck in the tent. I’ve gotten out of the habit of bringing a tarp on short weekend trips, which really would have been handy on two camping trips this summer where we were dogged by rain.
So what precautions do you take to deal with Stormy Weather? Any gear, gadgets or apps are musts for you to deal with, monitor whether a Hard Rains Gonna Fall? Has nasty weather put a damper on recent trip, or given you an epic tale of how you took Shelter from the Storm? Have You Ever Seen the Rain? The answer my friend, is Blowing in the Wind.
This is an open thread, so post away about Heavy Weather, Riding the Storm Out, or any camping-related topic — musical reference not required.
