I vote Democratic because that will benefit my little family. I vote that way because I want to keep my Social Security, my Medicare, and my veteran’s benefits. That’s all. All the rest — the social justice, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, is just collateral (not damage — the exact opposite of damage — benefits?).
I vote the way I do because I want my Dad, my sister and BIL, and Marvin and Teddums and Buzz and Peanut and Herbie (Dad’s doggie) — to be able to live as we have done. Maybe not a whole lot of money, but able to live indoors and have pets and eat not-crap food. I am very happy that my vote is also for various social-justice causes, and climate change, but frankly, it’s not the TOP of my agenda.
I suppose I have to bring up Bernie. I loved Bernie, but when I went to his political rally, here in the Twin Cities, I was put off a bit by his promises of things he couldn’t ever deliver. Also, the sobbing, chanting fan club. Politicians are people wanting a job from us. We should not be chanting en masse for them like rock stars. I don’t care who they are.
That said, I voted for Bernie in the primary, and Hillary in the general. Hillary is not the demon she has been made out to be. She has flaws, yes. But a billion investigations over 20 or more years, well. Way to go, liberal media.
Liberal media sucks up to TRUMP. That’s all you need to know about them.
I vote carefully and thoughtfully, in all elections. Local ones included. I will confess to a bias in local elections toward anybody running for local office who actually bothers to turn up at my doorstep in the trailer court and talk to me about issues. I voted for both candidates for New Brighton city council who did that. (both of them won, btw)
My Dad voted third party in 2016. Gary Johnson. He just couldn’t stand Hilly, he said. Well, he is 87 and men of that age just can’t stand a woman telling them what to do. And Hilly reminded him of his nagging Mom. Now I remember Grandma — she wasn’t just a nag, she was a Mean Girl. She used to beat the crap out of my Dad when he was a boy for minor infractions. So I understand.
I myself don’t tell anybody what to do. I sort of go, well ok, that’s cool, would this work too? It works with bosses at work, as well as Dad.
He came and APOLOGIZED to me after Trump got elected, for helping. I said, no worries, Dad, Minnesota went for Hilly anyway haha.
He is absolutely appalled at the current state of affairs. As am I.
I hope you all are having a great Saturday (Caturdai? looking forward to that diary).
Love, Rose
