If Democrats regain the House this November, Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi promises, the tax returns of the occupier of the Oval Office are "fair game."
Obtaining those returns, Pelosi told the San Francisco Chronicle's editorial board "is one of the first things we'd do—that's the easiest thing in the world." It is not likely to actually be the easiest thing in the world, because Trump lawyers would fight it, but it is completely within the power of congressional committees to demand their release. Of course congressional Republicans have aided and abetted Trump in doing what no other president has done—refuse to make his taxes public.
It'd be a welcome return to some semblance of normal in the House, committees doing their job and as Pelosi says, a return to regular oversight by Congress, "a co-equal body of government," Pelosi said in the interview. "We have to have the truth." That doesn't mean all out war with him, she says. "I, probably more than most people do, respect the office he serves in, probably more than he does," she said. "But he is the president—we have to find our common ground. ... We want to get results for the American people." But, she makes very clear, Democrats "will never negotiate away our values."
In not so many words, it's an FU to Mitch McConnell with his warning for Democrats that "presidential harassment" would "help the president get re-elected." Pelosi is not going to be intimidated by McConnell, which is just one of the reasons Democrats winning the House is job one this fall.
