The life of a candidate can be overwhelming. Sharice Davids, Democratic candidate has faced attacks many candidates get to avoid. As a Native American, she had a Johnson County Republican party official say she should be sent back to the reservation. She faced television ads that darkened her skin color and changed her look.
And yet, Sharice Davids kept going. And going. Today, the Conservatives of Southern Johnson County, a group that has been shared and promoted by the official Republican party pages, decided to take a swipe at Democratic candidates seemingly aimed at Sharice — and again, aimed at her skin color.
The post, which features Republicans as “white” and in favor of patriotism, shows the hand of a person of color as Democratic — and encourages their voters to “walk away” from the person of color.
For many candidates, a campaign alone is difficult. People will accuse you of things, they will make personal attacks on your character. It is difficult. Sharice Davids, though, has also had to endure racist and demeaning attacks as often for who she is as to her political beliefs.
Michelle Obama said “when they go low we go high” but Sharice Davids found a new way — she went low, and not with a personal attack. Upon seeing a complete stranger at an event had a flat tire, she rolled up her sleeves and got as low as you could go — to the ground — to help jack up and change their tire.
This is the Kansas way. This is what we, as Kansans, are about: we help our neighbor. Dressed in a nice outfit to meet voters? It doesn’t matter.
There is a difference here, and it isn’t just the difference between people who use race baiting to try and attack someone. When someone shows you who they are, you believe them. Sharice Davids every day shows Kansans who she is — she’s the kind of leader that helps others, even at her own inconvenience. This is who we need representing us in Washington DC.
Can you chip in and help us send candidates like Sharice to Congress?
