I did it because of the Kaepernick ad . . . and the reaction of Donald Trump and his followers.
I saw a recent article that commented on Nike’s apparently successful gambit with the Colin Kaepernick ad. It seems that despite all the wailing (and useless burning of shoes) from angry old white people, sales are up and the stock is doing just fine. (Even with the recent general market slump, Nike is still up 15% for the year — far better than the Dow average.)
The ad is geared straight at Nike’s core audience: young, hip 18 to 34 year-olds. Sadly, I no longer come close to being either young or hip. I’m 62 and white, but my money is just as good.
There are numerous fine choices in men’s tennis shoes. But only one company took a stand (or knee) for social justice . . . Nike.
My purchase isn’t much, but I wanted to make a statement.
Had it not been for the Kaepernick ad, I’d probably have gone with one of my more typical choices for my tennis shoes, like New Balance or K-Swiss. But Nike’s support for Kaepernick tipped the scales.
Yes. Sometimes Good Values do equal Good Business. Congratulations Nike, for being both bold AND successful.
