One of my pet peeves is listening to people criticize the Democratic Party. I wonder, what do they have to do with the Democratic Party? I would like to know if they are members and supporters of their local Democratic Party. Maybe it’s because I’ve been an officer of my local county Democratic Party for going on eight years. As treasurer.
I live in a red county in the red state of Georgia. I have been a member of the local county Democratic Party for fifteen years. I am lower middle class, senior, not being able to retire. Needing to work to make ends meet. I believe in Democratic values. I don’t think I have ever voted for a Republican in my life. So I got involved with my local county Democratic Party, and have been working with them ever since. As treasurer, would you like me to tell you how difficult it has been to fund the Party just to keep the office rent and internet/telephone paid. It’s not that much, like $450 a month. So when billionaire donors give tens of millions to the national party, I cry, just give each of us counties a few thousand dollars. You have no idea how much more that could do than your TV ads.
All that to say this, if you have Democratic values, if you are definitely not a Republican, this is the time we begin to stand up against the forces of oppression, epitomized by the Republican Party. The best way to do that is by turning out Democratic voters on election day in numbers that overwhelm the Republican vote. That takes primarily a physical effort in canvassing, phonebanking, and getting our voters to the polls. Investment in campaign materials can help that effort immensely. You can do a lot to accomplish this by joining your local Democratic party. It’s usually organized on a county level. Join the party. Contribute to it. Then volunteer to exercise the shoe leather necessary to have a winning campaign.
