Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post, from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum.
I’ve come to think of this series as one where you come for the music and stay for the conversation—so feel free to leave a note, comment, picture, or tune. The diarist gets to sleep in, and can show up long after the post is published. So you know, it's a feature, not a bug.
Grab your cup of tea, coffee, or wassail and join us for a break from the tedium of the day.
Having spent some of my formative years in Louisiana, I came to love the customs, food, and especially the music. The coffee ain’t bad either. Walking downtown in the morning, I would see many elderly gentlemen sitting at sidewalk cafes with tiny demitasse cups of incredibly strong, chicory laced, coffee. They would be chatting in Cajun French as they played checkers and gossiped about events of the day. It could have been a scene from any French town or village.
The music had a strong Creole and French influence. Including song lyrics.
I am not entirely sure Aaron Neville is from this planet, but he is an icon of the Louisiana music scene.
