Climate is fickle and it’s getting stranger by the year. Last year we had more rain than ever recorded in northern California. This year we are having a terrible drought which is actually a continuation of several drought years that piled up prior to last winter. In January and early February, we were having sunny day’s that reached into the mid to upper 70’s. Nights were 42-52 degrees. This caused things to bloom early...again. Now we are in the midst of the coldest blast of winter we’ve had yet with temps dropping into the mid-20’s which should last another 10 days at least.
All of this spells trouble for plants that have bloomed. Other plants that haven’t bloomed yet just can’t take sustained temps that low at night for a couple weeks or more and will fade away. We do “Darwinian Gardening” around here meaning things that don’t make it anymore, depending on conditions, will vanish and not be planted again.
I was going to do this diary to show you all that was blooming in our garden right now. Three days ago plants were vibrant and happy. Now they are starting to show stress after a couple below freezing nights. It won’t be getting any better for some time. So I decided to still do the diary I’d planned. It just won’t be quite what I had expected it to be. I’ll concentrate on plants that are still doing fine.
