Ranking House Democrats on several key committees interrupted congressional hearings Tuesday to protest the Trump administration's forcible separation of families at the border. In the middle of a Judiciary Committee hearing on the FBI's investigation of Hillary Clinton's emails, New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler "broke from traditional protocol and started reading from a statement, saying 'these children are not animals,'" writes Reuters.
His Republican colleagues tried to shout over him “Out of order!”
Amid Nadler's remarks, women attending the hearing with their children began yelling, “Families belong together!”
Over at the House Oversight Committee hearing on Clinton’s emails, ranking member Elijah Cummings of Maryland launched into an impassioned speech against Trump's internment camps. “We are better than that!” he said, blasting the policy. (video below)
“We should be able to agree that we will not keep kids in child internment camps indefinitely and hidden away from public view. What country is that? This is the United States of America!,” said Cummings, who was visibly emotional as his voice grew louder.
Democratic lawmakers also ambushed Trump as he left the Capitol Tuesday night after meeting with GOP House members. Holding up signs with pictures of crying kids, they told Trump to “Quit separating the children” as he passed by them. Watch the video below.
