YES, Everyone should be calling their Senators and urging “No” votes on Kavanaugh. Give brief, but cogent reasons: He’ll overturn Roe; His racist remarks and connections; His threat to the lives and livelihood of Native Hawaiians and/or Alaskan Natives; His perjuries before the Senate to get his current judicial appointment; His involvement in torture; Missing documents; His dangerous belief in presidential immunity to investigation or accountability to the rule of law; The credible accusation of sexual assault by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. (Pick one or two, rather than the whole list.) If you’ve already called with one reason, call back with another.
However, everyone should ALSO write the “Letters to the Editor” page of their local paper and express opposition. Even today, went print journalism is less influential, SENATORS STILL PAY ATTENTION TO LETTERS IN THEIR LOCAL PAPER. Aides bring these to their attention and note how many are running one way and how many another. Senate aides typically estimate for their senators that every letter to the editor represents at least 10 other voters with similar views! So, writing such letters helps increase pressure.
I will be writing the Louisville Courier-Journal and the Lexington Herald-Leader with something like the following:
The nominations of Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court of the United States should be withdrawn. There is already credible evidence that he perjured himself before the Senate in 2004 and 2006 in order to be confirmed to his present position as an Appeals Court Judge. We know that he worked to help craft the justifications for unlimited detention and torture of terror suspects for the George W. Bush administration. He has given the strange opinion that presidents cannot even be investigated, or required to give testimony under oath, making them above the law. All this we already know. Now, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford gives credible testimony that, while in high school, Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a party. Dr. Ford has submitted to a polygraph administered by the FBI and risks her name and personal life to give this testimony. Judge Kavanaugh has proven himself willing to lie under oath to the Senate before and is highly motivated to have a lifetime appointment to highest court in our land. I know whom I would believe. Sen. McConnell should withdraw his nomination now. There are plenty of other qualified candidates for the Supreme Court.
Adjust your letters to your local situation. Write tonight. Call tonight and tomorrow. Keep it up.
