According to the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tufts University’s Tisch College of Civic Life, California’s 24th Congressional district is one where young people can have a decisive impact on the results of the election. Salud Carbajal is the current Congressional representative of the district and he is running for reelection. Born in Mexico, Carbajal immigrated to the United States and settled in Oxnard with his family. After graduating from the University of California Santa Barbara and Fielding Graduate University, he was a reserve in the United States Marine Corps for eight years. Carbajal was elected to the Board of Supervisors of Santa Barbara County in 2004 and served until he ran for Congress during the 2016 election cycle. He won the election by about 21,000 votes and has served in Congress since then. Now, he’s running for reelection.
In Congress, Carbajal has served on the Committee on Armed Services and the Committee on the Budget. He is a member of the following Congressional caucuses: Hispanic Caucus, Asian Pacific American Caucus, Baltic Caucus, and the New Democrat Coalition. Carbajal has received high ratings from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the NAACP, the National Education Association, the League of Conservation Voters, and the AFL-CIO. He has been endorsed by the California League of Conservation Voters, End Citizens United, J Street PAC, NARAL, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, the Sierra Club, and multiple unions and labor organizations.
The 2018 midterm elections will determine which party controls Congress and Carbajal’s electoral prospects on November 6th will be decided by the citizens of California’s 24th district. Time to get to work!
