Businessman, activist, environmentalist, and impeachment of the current President advocate, Tom Steyer said, ‘it’s not rude to call out a lie, it's rude to lie.’ In response to a potentially devastating accusation from former Trump ‘trickster’ Michael Cohen, that Donald Trump directed him to lie to Congress, Joaquin Castro tweeted, “ If the Buzzfeed News story is true, President Trump must resign or be impeached.” Castro, the Democratic representative of the 20th congressional district of Texas and twin brother of newly announced presidential candidate Julián Castro is embroiled, along with Steyer, in partisan and pundit skirmishes over telling a simple truth. The truth is that the current occupant of the Oval Office is an unrepentant liar and if he committed a felony (suborning of perjury) it warrants either forced or voluntary removal from the Presidency.
Anyone who knows me will attest to the fact that I am a cautious and prudent thinker, but over the past two years, I have heard evangelist disgrace themselves over and over by abdicating all their moral principles to truth and fidelity. I have seen the likes of conservative hawks like Lindsey Graham and John Cornyn excuse the abhorrent behavior of the President. Just a few days ago newly elected Senator Mitt Romney, who warned former President Obama that Russia was still the biggest geopolitical threat to the world, voted to continue the relief of sanctions against Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska. Eleven Republicans did join with Democrats to keep the sanctions in place but Romney is already proving true the fears of Democrats. His first meaningful vote is showing that he is ready to become the new Jeff Flake, lots of bluderbuss followed by an impotent pop of discontent.
We have heard a recorded phone call preceded by a contradictory video and statement, given on Air Force One, from the President proving his culpability in finance campaign violations. He said, “ no. no…” of the Stormy Daniels’(nee Stephanie Clifford) payoff but later in a released phone recording we heard him in detailed conversation with Cohen, not only acknowledging the payment but discussing the best way to surreptitiously hide it. Ask directly by a reporter during the impromptu Air Force One flight, “ if you know where he[Cohen] got the money?’ The President answered, “ no I don’t.”
As much as this may sound like old history that is exactly what the President is counting on. So much is thrown at us on a daily basis that we forget what happened yesterday. Although Democrats seem reticent to use the word impeachment by substituting the euphemism, the “I word,” from my moral layman’s eyes blatantly lying about paying off a porn actress and cheating on your wife while she is at home with your four month old should make even—Jimmy Swaggart blush.
Politically the shabby treatment of his “mad dog” General James Mattis, the lack of foreign policy clarity, that Republicans railed against during the Obama administration, let alone Trump’s embrace of Tayyip Erdogan, Kim Jong-un, Rodrigo Duterte and Vladimir Putin, all murderers and despots would have led Graham to label the Commander-in-Chief a ‘kook “ unfit” for office.’ Actually he did in February of 2016, but I guess when you start bootlicking you develop a taste for it.
