Lindsey Graham isn’t a Republican; he’s a Trumptorian. Graham is a sham, a toady, a sycophant, and a blatant lying hypocrite. But it is time to finally make a clear distinction between the corrupt, dying, oligarchic Republican Party; and the Party of Trump. A Trumptorian is the name I concocted to more accurately distinguish between the Republican Party, and the malignant mutation that consists solely of the cult of personality that worships the charismatic sociopathic demagogue in the White House, Donald Trump. The name Trumptorian combines two key elements: Trump and Tory.
You have to go back about 250 years to remember that the first two major political factions in America were the Tories and the Patriots. The Tories were loyal to the King of England and believed that the power of the English monarchy would protect them. The Patriots considered King George a tyrant and wanted complete independence from the rule of England and the King. They went so far as to propose, in 1776, that America should be a free and independent democracy, free from the dictatorship of a King not chosen by the people.
Neither the Tories nor the Patriots were interested in bi-partisan support and co-operation. There was no call to “work across the aisle.” The future of the country was at stake. Either you were a Patriot and for independence; or you were a Tory and pledged blind loyalty to the King. If I remember correctly, a war was fought over this issue. Most of us have read about it and recall heroes like Paul Revere, Patrick Henry, Ben Franklin, Tom Jefferson, and George Washington. If the Tories had won, these guys would have been vilified in history as traitors and terrorists. But the Patriots won, so today they are called our founding fathers. These men weren’t perfect; some even owned slaves; but they were all convinced that the only hope for freedom was freedom from the tyranny of a King. Instead of imperial rule, they opted for democracy. What most of us don’t recall is that many Tories had to flee for the lives and escape to Canada. The Tories were in the minority but their allegiance to the King primed them to reject the “common sense" of the Revolutionaries. The Tories had to go.
The Trumptorians today are in the minority and their allegiance to Trump mirrors the allegiance to the King of England the Tories expressed over 250 years ago. Had the Tories in our historical past succeeded, our independent democratic republic would not have been born in 1776. If the Trumptorians of the present succeed, Trump will be granted unchecked powers, and our democracy will die and be replaced by dictatorship.
When Lindsey Graham shamelessly attacks the FBI for minor indiscretions, simply to create the illusion poor President Trump should never have been investigated in the first place; but considers the treason, bribery, and impeachable high crimes and misdemeanors unlawfully perpetrated by Trump to be no big deal, but merely the equivalent of hearsay resulting in a parking ticket; what we have is not just blatant hypocrisy, but the realization that Graham isn’t a Republican; he is a Trumptorian.
Two hundred and fifty years of Constitutional rule is a good run, but I hate to see democracy die in my lifetime. If the Trumptorians triumph, the rest of us who have been in the resistance may have to flee to Canada.
