With the re-election of Barack Obama in 2012, the United States decided it would drive a top-rated hybrid for four more years. Much like the top-rated car for that year, Obama was economically sound, quiet and quick on acceleration. Compare that to one of the worse lemons produced by this country, America went backward and reintroduced the Pinto in 2016. Donald J. Trump is a reincarnation of the Ford Pinto, crude, shapeless and most notably, ready to burst into flames.
It was suggested to me this week that the Democrats are shopping at the used car dealership this election cycle, to that I say, here, here. From the experience and mileage of Joe Biden to the array of model choices in Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar to the newly minted Cory Booker all these vehicles of change are used to the road and can navigate the curves without a major crash. Our current Pinto-Prez is constantly rupturing his gas tank and spilling fuel all over the highways of our lives. We cannot go a day without listening to his excuses or whining about investigations into his financial illegalities, or his banal protestations punctuated by the words “no collusion.”
After a number of lawsuits and admission that their compact car was a boondoggle, borne of small-minded thinking, design flaws and failed repackaging as the Mercury Bobcat, Ford finally threw in the towel. America, we shopped for new cars with the past two Presidents. We picked a sleek, comfortable ride in Obama, and it is time for America to admit it bought a lemon or more precisely an orange, in Donald Trump. His followers are willing to experience the bumpy ride, ugly exterior and even seedier interior for what they think is a ride to panacea land; a world with no one different from them.
For the rest of us, the diverse majority, the smelling of noxious fumes, itchy Naugahyde seats, and a steering system so unsteady, that it cannot help but run over the grave of a dead man, cruise control sounds like a respite. This is not to recommend or condone a Democratically controlled White House that would sit back and enjoy the ride. The first four years of a newly elected Democratic President will be similar to that of the Obama administration, fixing the damage caused by the previous driver. Reinstating America’s commitment to the Climate, restoring our reputation for integrity around the world and recognizing the rule of law as a value, to name a few. Obama took a few nicks to his paint job, a drone war, trade deals and not achieving complete withdrawal from the Mideast. I was and am a huge Barack Obama fan but unlike the current occupant of the White House, I can tell the truth about the strengths and weaknesses of a real man.
The biggest failure of Donald Trump is not being enough man to withstand the words of his critics, because they too often are truths he does not want to hear. 2020 is around the corner the Pinto is leaking oil and America demands a smoother, safer ride.
